Like many, I’ve faced my own mental health challenges. This book was born from two practices that have profoundly supported me in quieting my mind and busying my hands: journaling and coloring.
Over the past six years, journaling has become my anchor. It began out of necessity when I was recovering from a concussion and I couldn’t rely on my usual screen-based distractions. As I wrote, I felt liberated and more at peace. Since becoming a mom, my journaling practice has become a sacred part of my routine. It’s an integral part of my morning ritual and a time when I fill my cup before pouring it into my children’s.
The second part of this book, the coloring affirmations, combines two other tools that have been essential in my mental health journey. Years ago, I began writing affirmations in my journal and repeating them aloud: “I am worthy,” “I am deserving,” “I am enough” and, over time, this simple practice changed the way I saw myself. Similarly, I discovered that adult coloring books were a creative and productive outlet for me. To bring these coloring affirmations to life, I collaborated with my friend and freelance graphic design artist, Hannah Sheridan (@hannah.sheridan.design), who perfectly captured my vision.
How To Use
I want you to have complete creative freedom with this book. That said, I know some of us (looking at you, Virgos and recovering Type-A personalities) appreciate a little more structure and guidance, so here’s how I personally use this journal. For me, starting my day with writing is my way to center myself, so I like to use the journal section of this book in the morning. The small prompts are designed to gently guide you, but if they don’t resonate, feel free to simply let your thoughts flow freely. I find that ending my day with something creative helps me unwind, and that’s why I love to do the coloring pages in the evening. These images are designed so that you can start and complete one in a single sitting, which is perfect for those who love the satisfaction of seeing a project through. The dotted lines around the image make it easy for you to cut the 5x7 border and frame it—either for your home or as a gift for a friend.
You can use this book for a 30-day challenge if you enjoy having a bit of accountability, or simply revisit it whenever you have time to prioritize yourself. No matter how you choose to use it, this book is here to support you and your mental health.
This book is dedicated to my boys, who are, quite literally, my why, and to my rock, Joe. I couldn’t do any of this without you and I wouldn’t want to do this life with anyone else.
