77: Emma Chasen (@emmachasen), Cannabis Educator and Consultant
On this episode, I talk to cannabis expert Emma Chasen (@emmachasen). We discuss stigmas in the cannabis world, and the privilege that comes with consuming and talking about weed. We talk about the incredible healing powers of cannabis, and being able to normalize its use through education and access to information. Emma highlights the importance of describing the experience you want to achieve to determine which compounds to look for in your plant, and dives into the basic dose response curve.
FOLLOW UP Q&A:
First thing you do in the morning? Coffee! Upon waking up, I immediately make some coffee in my percolator and drink a cup while catching up on news and instagram.
What advice would you give your younger self? Don't be so afraid of taking risks. The best things in life come on the other side of risk.
Wellness trend you love and wellness trend you wish would end? I love that people are interested in plant medicine and inspired to do research and try CBD, cannabis, and even psychedelics. I truly believe the intentional integration of plant medicine can bring so much value to peoples' lives. I really think this 'trend' could reframe the way people feel about their health and their bodies and that is so cool! A wellness trend I don't like is the avid use of essential oils as a 'curative'. Essential oils are wonderful as aromatherapeutic agents, however, I really don't think they should be ingested abundantly - it can actually be really dangerous.
First Job? As an undergrad, I worked in the greenhouse at Brown University as a greenhouse assistant. It was so amazing to be among and care for so many different plants.
Proudest moment? Being the first and only person to get into Brown from my fairly rundown public high school was suuuuch a proud moment for me. Then after college, deciding to take the leap and move across the country to Portland, OR, having never been here before, was another really proud moment.
3 most used emojis? 💚🌱✨
Favorite ice cream flavor? Mint chocolate chip forever
Night time routine? Take a shower, eat an edible, watch a bit of TV, and get in bed by 9:30 to read.
Cocktail of choice? A glass of red wine always fills my Italian girl heart, but if I'm going for a cocktail I love a good passionfruit margarita
Always in your bag? Toothpicks! I love cleaning my teeth after I eat lol
SHOW NOTES:
Before we have this conversation regarding cannabis, I must also acknowledge the racial injustice of the industry. As stated by the Last Prisoner Project, “no one should remain incarcerated or continue to suffer the collateral consequences of prohibition and the War on Drugs, which has and continues to disproportionately impact communities of color.” To donate to LPP, which is a nonprofit coalition of cannabis industry leaders dedicated to bringing restorative justice to the cannabis industry, donate here.
